The Local Area

We are situated on the edge of the Somerset Levels with its battles and myths surrounding King Alfred. Around us are the Quantock, Polden and Brendan hills fantastic for walkers and watchers of the wild horses and deer. The sandy beaches of Burnham are within 30mins drive as are the pebble beaches near Kilve and East Quantoxhead en route to more sand at Minehead.

The Bridgwater & Taunton Canal – tea shop @ Maunsel Lock and you can take the boat through the lock and down to the bridge at Lower Maunsel or alternatively follow the Space Walk along the towpath. A leisurely 15 minute walk will take you to the canal from the cottages

The Willow and Wetland centre @ Stoke St Gregory

Bird watching at West Sedgemoor RSPB reserve for over wintering wildfowl and the wildlife centre @ Fyne Court

West Somerset Steam Railway @ Bishops Lydeard

Shopping in Street @ Clarks Village – a discount brand name shoppers heaven!

Walking the Parrett Trail or Macmillan Way – as tiring as the above but without shops!

Glastonbury with its Abbey and Tor and the festival – no festival in 2006 – make the most of Glastonbury when its quiet!

Heritage houses and gardens – Hestercombe gardens, Montecute House, Tyntesfield House, Barrington Gardens, Dunster Castle, Mulcheney Abbey

Cheddar with its gorge, Caves and Jacobs Ladder along with the fantastic local produce on sale in the town – esp. the cheddar with marmite – love it or hate it

Forest trails in the Great Woods – 15 minutes drive.

The stately home, Maunsel House, nearby provides a lavish environment for weddings and other functions. We can act as overflow accommodation for their visitors.

Bridgwater with its Carnival – the largest in Europe – if you don’t believe me, then come and see it! You can walk into North Petherton to see the carnival pass through the town on the Saturday closest to the 5th November. The Museum, Docks, annual Water Festival, and a wide range of restaurants and takeaways.

Taunton – county town of Somerset and home to Somerset CCC, the Brewhouse Theatre and many restaurants and shops.

Sports available locally:

Fishing – fishery, sea, river and elver fishing in the local Ryhnes.

Golf – 5 mins drive away.

Swimming – in Bridgwater, Taunton and outdoor pool in Street.

Cycling along one of the many dedicated cycle routes across the Somerset Levels Gym – within 8 minutes drive.
